It is one of the largest performing arts centers in the United States. It covers 7.5 acres (3 hectares) in the Civic Center Historic District, and totals 7,500 seats among its venues. The artists who have performed on its stage are as legendary as the building itself. The theater hosts more than 60 performances of nine operas annually and for 85 years has been a vibrant enclave of arts, culture and creativity. During the years of Kurt Herbert Adler's general directorship, the inadequacies of the house became apparent as the season was expanded.

Harold L. Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall is located at the corner of Franklin and Hayes streets, and is directly adjacent to Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall. Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall consists of three rehearsal facilities, which can be used for a multitude of rehearsal purposes and movie shoots.[3] Herbst Theatre is housed in the Veterans building as homage to the War Memorial Opera House. The War Memorial Opera House, or the Opera House, with 3,146 seats, was built in 1932 as part of the original War Memorial Building. It has been the home of the San Francisco Opera since 1932, as well as the San Francisco Ballet. Civic Center Ambassadors wearing orange jackets will be leading a walking group to the Civic Center BART and MUNI station.

If you do arrive late, you can relax with food and drink in one of our bars and watch the performance on a TV. You will find plenty of options to get to the War Memorial Opera House. I recommend taking public transit as it's the easiest, but you will also find several places to park if you do decide to drive. You will also find dozens of additional options around Union Square. From here, you will walk just about 5 blocks to get to the show. During this season the SF Opera usually has 4 to 6 operas for you to choose from when you come here. The season runs from January to May and the last performance is always on Mother's Day so it can be a wonderful way to surprise mom. It's a wonderful place to catch a show while you are in San Francisco. You will find several nice places to eat before your performance and you can easily get here on public transportation.

All performances by the San Francisco Ballet are in the War Memorial Opera House. The ballet was founded in 1933 and was the first professional ballet in the US. Home of the San Francisco Opera and the San Francisco Ballet, the War Memorial Opera House (also known as the Opera House) features 3,146 seats and was built in 1932. The upper floors of the Veterans Building housed the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (formerly the San Francisco Museum of Art) from 1935 to 1994. In 1980 the new Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall opened, on a site on Van Ness across the sidestreet from the Opera House, as part of the SFWMPAC complex. Visit The Ballet Shop on the Mezzanine level south side of the Opera House or The Shop kiosk on the main lobby pre-show, during intermission, and after the show, or shop online 24/7.

On June 26, 1945, the United Nations Charter was signed in the Veterans Building's Herbst Theatre by the group of 50 founding nations, following the two-month-long United Nations conference in the Opera House. Opera, symphony, modern and classical dance, theatre, recitals, plays, lectures, meetings, receptions, special screenings, and gala events all have a place and occur at the Center. The San Francisco War Memorial acknowledges that we are on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone who are the original inhabitants of the San Francisco Peninsula.
